THIS MONTH - SEPTEMBER 2010Vulnerable leaders
This last week has featured major news stories in which national leaders, whether by choice or because of pressure, have made themselves extremely vulnerable to public opinion. The media have probably never been as frenzied or as intrusive as they are today, but leaders have always been far more exposed to criticism, deserved or undeserved, in their private lives as well as in their public roles, than the rest of us mortals. St Paul knew what it was to be misunderstood, to have his motives criticised from afar, and to have his authority undermined by opponents with their own agendas. As we begin this morning to turn the pages of his second letter to the Corinthians, we shall see how he responded to such accusations. There are some vital lessons we can learn from his willingness to speak so frankly about his experiences, and his motives! (Probably the earliest surviving portrait of St Paul, a mosaic in the Chora Church, Istanbul)
