THIS MONTH - February
14th Valentines Day
Traditionally you give cards and gifts to your loved one. Sometimes if you are shy you may send a love token anonymously to let someone know they are appreciated or maybe even loved. We often forget the greatest Valentines gift ever made and that was the death of our Lord Jesus on the cross. He was put to death for you and me, so that as long as we believe in Him, accept and appreciate what He did for us, we could meet with our Father in heaven and live forever in glory. We cannot imagine how hard it was for God to send His Son to earth, to live among us trying to teach us how we should live; knowing that He would have to be sacrificed and die a horrible death for our sins. He did all this because of His great love for us. "For God so loved the world that he sent His only Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall have everlasting life".
17th February is Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday
is the first day of
Lent
and occurs forty-six days
(forty days not counting Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. There is usually a church service to remind us all of the approach of Easter and to identify the beginning of Lent, where many people give up something of importance and significance during that period. This is to symbolise the time Jesus spent in the wilderness without food or water. He knew what was ahead and He was preparing himself to face it.
